Sidney S. Gross

GROSS - Sidney (nee Sorsen)

 

Died peacefully at Canterbury Woods

 

in Williamsville, NY on March 25, 2017

 

at the age of 85. She was the beloved

 

wife of Roger Gross, who survives

 

her. Born in Evanston, IL, she was the

 

devoted mother of four sons: Stephen

 

(Mei Yan) of Cupertino, CA, Peter

 

(Kathryn) of Charlotte, NC, Barrett (Pamela)

 

of San Jose, CA and Thomas

 

(Mary) of Kalaheo, HI. She was sister

 

to Spencer L. Sorsen, who pre-deceased

 

her. She is also survived by

 

seven grandchildren, one great grandchild,

 

three nieces and two nephews.

 

She studied fine arts at Syracuse

 

University where she was a member

 

of the Pi Beta Phi sorority, finishing

 

her degree after raising her children at

 

Empire State College in 1975. Sidney

 

met her husband at Syracuse and

 

was married in 1951, after which they

 

moved to Buffalo, NY. They moved to

 

Connecticut in 1979, and returned to

 

Buffalo after 30 years in New London

 

and Mystic. While in Buffalo, she apprenticed

 

and worked as a goldsmith

 

for Orrin L. Becker. She was a member

 

of the Junior League of Buffalo, Ken-

 

Ton School System's Superintendent's

 

Cabinet and School System Redesign

 

Committee and was active with Buffalo

 

World Hospitality. During her years in

 

Mystic she continued as a goldsmith,

 

creating custom pieces on commission.

 

She served as Chairman of the

 

Historic District Commission, and was

 

active with the Mystic Library. She

 

and Roger traveled through much of

 

the world including England, western

 

Europe and Turkey, most of South

 

America, and the western Pacific including

 

China, Japan, Thailand and

 

New Zealand. A memorial service is

 

planned for 10 AM Monday, June 12,

 

2017 at North Presbyterian Church,

 

300 N. Forest Rd., Williamsville, NY.
